I wish I was an atom.
Despite their differences,
Oppositely charged ions attract.
They do not have to be near
Those who they dislike,
For those ions just repel.
Then again there are times.
Times when these
Little atoms
Come together,
And then form a bond.
The saying that,
"Sharing is caring,"
Applies to these particles
When they metallically
Or covalently bond.
For covalent bonds,
Although they want to repel,
They share their electrons,
And act maturely,
Civilly, and dutifully.
For metallic bonds,
They, too, want to disperse,
But they hold on and help each other
To survive in the large, undulating
Sea of electrons.
These nearly invisible,
Always moving and changing atoms,
They are never alone.
Positive and negative and neutral
Will always find each other.
So I just wish to be an atom,
Sharing, bonding, and polite.
But I know that this wild dream,
This great fantasy,
Will never come true.
So I will stay content as a human.
